Wool in the Wolds Exhibition by Lamorna Thomas

Lamorna’s exhibition is on from the Friday 19th September until Saturday 15th November 2025.

“Wool in The Wolds” is Lamorna’s first solo exhibition - a collection of both 2D and 3D creations to show many different ways of using wool with other fibres such as mulberry bark, woven linen and sari silk offcuts. The inspiration for this creative wealth has been the move North to live in The Lincolnshire Wolds (and build her own garden). As with many artists, the big skies in this open landscape have a lot to do with stimulating her artistic expression. The geology and agriculture of The Wolds also play a part in the development of her work.

This collection of works hopefully inspires you to create felted objects and wall hangings that display the wonder of nature and The Lincolnshire Wolds, feeding the awe you have for our environment into the things you can make.

You are most welcome to join Lamorna at her preview evening on Thursday 18th September between 6pm & 8pm

Learn the ancient craft of wet felting - working wool fibres with warm soapy water to create an heirloom piece of art to grace your home. Join artist Lamorna Thomas to make an A4 sized wall hanging. No previous felting experience necessary.

Multiple dates to choose from: Sat 27 Sept, Wed 1 Oct, Sat 11 Oct, Wed 5 Nov, Sat 15 Nov

10am-12.30pm, £30 per workshop: all materials included

The Pleasurable Painting Group are exhibiting with us from Wednesday 17th September until Saturday 15th November 2025

The Pleasurable Painting Group was formed in 2016 and was originally led by Mags Bradley. They are mainly local amateurs who get together purely for the pleasure of painting, as the name suggests.   In the beginning, they met at the Caistor Arts and Heritage Centre, but their numbers increased so much, that they later had to move to a larger venue. They now meet at the Town Hall.

The artists bring their own ideas to the sessions and members have developed their individual styles and approaches. Most people work in watercolour, but they may also use some acrylics, oils or pastels. Experimentation with different media is part of the fun! It is interesting for each of the artists to hear someone else’s opinions of their work, and they support each other with feedback and helpful suggestions.

On Thursday the 18th September between 6pm & 8pm we have a wine & nibbles open evening so you could come along and meet some of the artists that will be exhibiting.

Lamorna Thomas joins us for 'Wool in the Wolds'

Lamorna Thomas, from Felted by Lamorna, will be joining us for an exhibition of her work from Friday 19th September – Sunday 16th November 2025. You are also invited to join us to meet the artist and preview the exhibition on Thursday 18th September 2025 6-8pm.

Lamorna used to work as a Garden Designer in South Cambridgeshire, but she has now retired to create her own third of an acre garden near Market Rasen.

Lamorna took up wet felting wool about ten years ago to expand her artistic flair into a different medium and is a member of the not-for-profit International Feltmakers Association. This was established to promote felt in all its forms.

Lamorna’s handmade fibre works include practical and artistic felted pieces for the home, to complement interiors, that are both beautiful and functional.

She meticulously researches the design process for each crafted item, keeping sketchbooks, and draws on the natural world and other artists for inspiration. Having quickly mastered flat, corded and 'Nuno' felting techniques using Merino wool and British breeds of wool, she moved onto resist projects to produce useful and creative 3D items, incorporating various upcycled fabrics, such as sari silks, organic materials, like nettle fibre and fern fronds. Lamorna’s passion is to teach people the wonderful craft of wet felting and holds many workshops, both locally, and at some of the Wool Shows put on up and down the country.

Lamorna will be hosting workshops on Saturday 27th September, Wednesday 1st October, Saturday 18th October, Wednesday 5th November & Saturday 15th November.

Learn the ancient craft of wet felting - working wool fibres with warm soapy water to create an heirloom piece of art to grace your home. Join Lamorna Thomas ( Member of the International Feltmakers Association) to make an A4 sized wall hanging during the morning workshops to be held in the Exhibition Room at Caistor Arts & Heritage Centre.

Equipment, Wool fibres, surface decoration and tuition are included. You will need to bring a towel to felt onto, a tape measure, scissors and an apron, as there is a lot of soapy water involved!

Booking essential. Secure your place in the Cafe or via Eventbrite (fees apply).

‘70’ is just two weeks away …

… and we can’t wait! Caistor Arts & Heritage Centre has supported ‘70’ right from the start. From the moment Martha Woodward came to us at the beginning of 2024 with her idea for an exhibition and we said, ‘Yes’, we knew ‘70’ was going to be something different.

As I write this, Martha and her collaborators, Barbara, Jane and Karen, are putting the finishing touches to ‘70’. It’s the culmination of countless hours of hard work, learning and creativity that has enabled them to get to this point. We’ve asked Martha to tell us something about how the journey has unfolded over the last eighteen months. Has it been an easy ride? Is the end result as she expected?

‘My early concept for the exhibition was a very loose one. This much I knew – that it would be about 70 year olds, that I wanted ’70’ to be a collaborative project, and that there was no model to follow – we were going to have to make it all up ourselves.’

‘I started out with the idea that I wanted seven 70 year olds telling their life stories. Seven 70 year olds just seemed to have a ring about it. But, of course, I had to find those 70 year olds, which was to prove a major challenge. I got to four very quickly, and then six, but never reached seven. Two then fell by the wayside for perfectly good reasons and so we were back to the original four.’

‘At the outset, I was open-minded about having both men and women in the exhibition but it soon became apparent that all of the interest was coming from women. Only one man expressed interest – and he wasn’t 70 – so I decided to make it an all-female project. And, actually, I now know that we could not have had the same exhibition had there been seven of us. Four has turned out to be a good number.’

‘The four of settled on two themes to explore in more depth - ‘Loss’ and ‘Journeys’. We couldn’t fit any more than two, which is a shame because there is so much we could have included but for the space available.’

‘I think I’m guilty for promoting the idea of the ’70 World Map’, which will show which countries ten seventy year olds have visited in their lifetimes. We needed six more 70 year olds for that! Although it’s a lesser commitment, it still wasn’t easy finding those six. The last one came on board, thanks to a final mail-out by the Heritage Centre, in April. But at least we got there.’

‘Another major challenge has been financing ‘70’. Exhibitions don’t just happen without funding. I have to say a huge ‘Thank You’ to Lincolnshire Community Foundation, who came on board and without whom it would not have been possible to realise our vision for the exhibition. Without LCF’s grant … well, I don’t want to think about that!’

‘Is ‘70’ going to be as I originally envisaged? Yes! And more! I am so grateful to Barbara, Jane and Karen for staying the course. Everyone has given so much. None of us had any experience of creating an exhibition. It’s been a big undertaking – and a huge learning curve. But you know what? ‘70’ is testimony to what a group of 70 year old women can achieve. This is our exhibition and we are very proud of it. The acid test now is: what will be the reaction of visitors to ‘70’? I hope everyone seeing it will find it an engaging, creative, and even, perhaps, a surprising exhibition. And whatever our visitors’ thoughts, I hope they will leave their comments. We absolutely want to know what everyone thinks!’

There is only one way to find out what you think! Come and see ‘70’! The exhibition Previews on Friday 1st August and opens to the public on Saturday 2nd August, running for three weeks until Saturday 23rd August.

On a countdown to 70 …

It’s one month to 70, which Previews on 1st August. This is something different – an exhibition about 70 year old women by 70 year old women.

Caistor Arts & Heritage Centre has never hosted an exhibition like 70 before – has anywhere?! – so we’re breaking new ground. Of the ten women involved, eight live in Lincolnshire. One of the other two has connections to Caistor and that leaves one outlier who lives in Cumbria (we must find out how she got in on the act!).

It’s anticipated that all ten will be at the Preview to cut Barbara’s 70 cake. You might get a slice if you come along! If you live locally, you might recognise or know Ailsa, Martha and Shelagh. There’s also Janice from Holton-le-Moor.

Ailsa has helped to enlist the help of some Caistor Grammar School Year 7 and Year 8 pupils. They were asked to respond to the question, ‘What does an old person look like?’ Their drawings have been integrated into the design of the exhibition.

And the message on this drawing is true! None of the group feel 70. Age is just a number, after all. But in their 70 years, the group have all lived through and experienced many changes and some of these are explored in the exhibition.

As individuals, they are still very active and creative, as this exhibition proves! 70 opens to the public on Saturday 2nd August and runs for three weeks until Saturday 23rd August.

70 is supported by Lincolnshire Community Foundation.

70 days to 70...

It is 70 days to 70, our major summer exhibition

Caistor Arts & Heritage Centre is delighted to be hosting 70, a unique collaborative project and exhibition celebrating the life stories of a group of seventy year old women.

Creative, engaging, sometimes surprising and inspirational, the exhibition includes the 70 World Map showing which countries ten women who have reached three score years and ten have journeyed to during their lifetimes. How far and wide have they travelled?

Four seventy year olds are at the heart of 70 – Barbara, Jane, Karen and Martha. They have lived through the same times but are very different people. 70 explores their individual responses to some of the events and societal changes that have taken place during their lifetimes. It also includes personal reflections on suffering ‘Loss’ and how each of them views ‘What’s Next?’

70 Previews on Friday 1st August. The exhibition opens to the public on Saturday 2nd August and lasts for three weeks until Saturday 23rd August.
